Who the heck is Alejandro Fernández? Apparently he’s one of the biggest pop stars in Mexico. And he came to do a concert in Ensenada. Cool. We’ve been seeing huge banners and concert posters for him all over town.
Then, big trucks started rolling in and they set up an enormous stage right next to Cruiseport Village marina, in what is essentially a soccer field. The next morning, we woke up to sound checks. For hours, someone’s loud, rolling tenor voice boomed, “Hola…hola…sí…ho-ho-ho-hoooooola…sí…eeeeeeeeee-sí…hola.” And so on and so forth. They checked the lights, which were hella bright, even in the middle of the day, and then they did some more sound checks, and then they must have taken a break because it was quiet and still for a while. And then he showed up.
Ladies, FYI–there are a ridiculous number of bare chested photos of Alejandro Fernández lounging about the internets. But I digress. Turns out he’s a big pop star now, but when he first started out in the early 90’s, he did ranchera/mariachi music, like his dad Vicente Fernández, aka El Rey de la canción ranchera, aka the king of ranchera music. I feel pretty lucky we essentially got to go for free, since tickets for his shows can get pricey. His next gig in California has tickets going for as much as $240 a seat. That’s a lot of tacos. All of the liveaboards and cruisers at the marina, along with all the people who work here at the marina, had a concert party. We dragged couches from the lounge outside, and all the folding chairs that could be found and had barbecue, pizza, lots of wine and beer and an all around good time was had by all.
